Jaye came to live with us on February 15, 2004, thanks to Rhoda & Wally Ace at Tickitbou Boxers. It was a tough decision for Rhoda to part with this big lug, but she knew that he was going to a loving home where he would be spoiled rotten and to where his sister Paxton already lived. Rhoda encouraged me to learn to show Jaye myself for fun, who would have thought that I would learn so fast! Thanks to our friend Mary Curl at Shadowdale Boxers who had the patience to give me handling lessons, and shape the mold that Rhoda started.
I decided I needed some practice. I decided to enter Jaye at the first UKC show held in Ontario. I was nervous at first. Some judges in the UKC shows do not allow bait in the ring at all! What was I to do?! Well, me and Jaye managed to get BOB three out of four days, twice over the UKC's #1 Boxer at the time, as well as a Group 2 and two Group 3’s! We were so happy to have received a nice certificate in the mail with his UKC Title owner handled!
Since then, I jumped into the ring at the Boxer Club of Canada Regional Sweeps, and have watched Rhoda in the ring, watched Mary, watched everyone. I am what my friends call a human sponge and love to learn. I learn alot about health issues related to poor breeding through my rescue group with Boxer Rescue Ontario, as well as trying to learn about holistic vet care for my animals at home.
Rhoda paved the way by showing Jaye for the most part, but at least I got to appreciate the sport and watch and learn. But once he had most of his points under Rhoda, Rhoda handed me the lead and said, go ahead and finish him! She told me that once I finish him, to go ahead and have fun with him in with the Special!
I have learned so much about the breed in such little time and have only been showing since May 2004. I finished Jaye at the Markham Kennel Club show in August going WD and BOS. Now I am having fun showing Jaye in with Specials now. It's a long road ahead as I am new in the show scene, but I think we can manage!
I thank both my mentors, Rhoda Ace at Tickitbou and Mary Curl at Shadowdale Boxers for their faith in me and opening a new can of worms in my life! A good can of worms! |
